8 Tips to Develop Children’s Creativity

Creativity is one of the essential skills for survival in the 21st century. Children need to learn and develop creativity skills early on, both at home and at school.

Here are some tips about the stimulation and processes that parents need to do to develop their children’s creativity.

Psychological space for exploration

The first thing that parents need and can do is provide a sense of security for their children to develop their creativity. That means, parents provide an environment and atmosphere at home so that children dare to ask, try, and explore their curiosity. Children are not afraid of being scolded when making mistakes in the process of trying.

Unstructured play

Unstructured play is a useful stimulation tool in developing children’s creativity. The end goal is not specified. Children can determine their own goals and rules of play. Examples of unstructured play are blocks, paper cutting, playing with seeds, chasing, and so on.

Give free time

Free time is when children can play whatever they want to. During free time, parents do not give orders to do certain activities and do activities without specific direction from others.

By having free time, children learn to explore and choose their own activities. The ability to make your own choices is an important aspect of the creativity process.

Watch behind the scenes

Invite your child to watch videos that discuss “behind the scenes”, the creative process and the production process of a work. Stories about the creative process can also be obtained from story coverage or interviews with the creator.

Watching behind the scenes about the process of building a building, making a car, preparing for a concert, or the process of making a film will build children’s awareness and knowledge about the process of giving birth to a cool work.

Visiting the exhibition

Visit exhibitions, both art and industry exhibitions. Exhibitions usually display the best works. By visiting and enjoying the exhibition, children will learn to absorb various works and get interesting ideas from the works displayed.

Watching a show

Live performances of music, theater, and dance are the best performances of a work. In a performance, the best work is displayed and enjoyed directly by the audience.

The activity of attending and watching a performance is a means to absorb the results of the creative process. This learning process is interesting because it involves all the senses, not just cognitively.

Play guessing games

Playing guessing games is a simple and enjoyable play process, while also triggering children’s creative processes because they have to think of different answers.

“What thing has one leg and three eyes?” Answer: traffic light pole

If you don’t feel creative, you can buy books about riddles which are widely available in bookstores.

Give examples of creativity/work

The simplest way for parents to develop their children’s creativity is by setting an example. Pursue a hobby or activity, show your child how you solve problems creatively when faced with problems.

By combining these strategies with patience and encouragement, parents can help their children unlock their creative potential while fostering critical thinking skills that will benefit them throughout life.
